One question behind MyDebtLens has been: when people look for debt-planning help, what are they actually trying to solve?
We’ve now published some of the research behind that question.
We looked at a random sample of 2000 r/personalfinance submissions, alongside separate reviewed cohorts from r/Debt and r/debtfree.
An estimated 15.3% of the r/personalfinance sample concerned planning or managing existing debt. What interested me even more was the mix of decisions people were trying to make: savings trade-offs, consolidation or refinancing, payoff order, cash flow, windfalls and changing circumstances.
It reinforced one of the product decisions behind MyDebtLens: debt payoff planning needs to account for the rest of the month, not only balances and APRs.
