Turn Any Place on Earth into Wall Art
Today, the focus for Carto Art was with cleaning up the WIP colored hillshading layer. This works by taking the elevation data per tile as input, and then normalizes the elevation values and maps onto a color ramp gradient. Then, this layer gets draped over the map/terrain layer as a custom source, allowing for not only this beautiful view from top-down, but also while viewing in 3D mode with volumetric terrain.
Very happy with how this turned out from an artistic perspective!

Trying to improve the breadth of artistic styles that can be generated, while also minimizing the time it takes for a brand new user to create something they're proud of is quite a narrow and tricky gap to shoot for, but once you achieve it, the result is quite satisfying!
Attached is one of my more recent, stylized renders from Carto Art.

Tomorrow we're launching Strivle on TinyLaunch.
This is the moment we get to push past the early phase and bring in a real wave of founders. If you're on the platform already and want to help, going to need everyone to upvote at launch tomorrow. The more upvotes early, the higher we rank, the more new builders we pull in.
7 days ago this was a side project. Tomorrow we make it impossible to ignore. Let's get the OG cohort to show up.
I'll drop the link as soon as we're live 🔥

Damn... everybody cooking!! Looking good man, love the angled card in the header.
Good call on keeping it narrow. Can't wait to see more from this.

Engineering leader by day, indie dev by night. Process obsessive by necessity — 20+ years in high-stakes regulated software will do that.
This is beautiful!
Hey guys!
I am the developer behind Carto Art, and have been working on it for around a year at this point. This began as a frontend-only prototype inspired by a street vendor selling simple map prints. The realization that a more powerful, customizable tool could bridge the gap between technical GIS data and aesthetic interior decor led to its creation.
Main features:
- Create a map from anywhere in the world
- Select from over 50 different styles
- Volumetric 3D terrain and buildings, making locations such as Salt Lake City, UT and New York City, NY pop out
- Gif exports, via animated camera paths
- Gallery for users to publish their favorite maps
- (Still WIP) STL export of the terrain data for a given location
